Discover India's Agra Fort
Agra Fort is a massive red sandstone fortress on the banks of the Yamuna River, serving as the main residence of Mughal emperors for generations until the capital shifted to Delhi.
What Is Agra Fort and Why Is It Important?
Agra Fort (also known as Lal Qila or the Red Fort of Agra) is a massive 94-acre fortification on the right bank of the Yamuna River. Originally built as a brick fort by the Rajput Sikarwar clan, it was rebuilt in red sandstone by Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573. Three successive Mughal emperors — Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan — added palaces, mosques, and audience halls over the following century, creating the layered architectural masterpiece visible today.
The fort served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, when Shah Jahan shifted the capital to Delhi. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1983, recognizing it as a masterpiece of Mughal military architecture and palatial design (source: UNESCO World Heritage List).
What Will You See Inside Agra Fort?
Approximately one-third of the fort is open to tourists; the remaining area is under the control of the Indian Army. The accessible section contains some of the most exquisite Mughal structures in India.
The Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience) is where the emperor held court and heard petitions from common citizens. The Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) features ornate white marble with pietra dura inlay, where the emperor met important dignitaries.
Jahangir’s Palace, the largest residential building in the fort, blends Hindu and Central Asian design elements. The Musamman Burj, an octagonal tower with marble lattice screens, is where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years as a prisoner of his son Aurangzeb, gazing across the river at the Taj Mahal he had built for his wife.
How Should You Plan Your Visit to Agra Fort?
We recommend visiting Agra Fort in the morning after an early Taj Mahal visit, as the two monuments are only 2.5 km apart. The fort typically receives fewer crowds than the Taj Mahal, but mornings still offer the most comfortable temperatures and best photography light.
Entry is through the Amar Singh Gate on the southern side — the only gate currently open to tourists. Our same-day Agra tour from Delhi includes both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a licensed guide who provides historical context that transforms the visit from sightseeing into storytelling.
What Is the Military History of Agra Fort?
The fort’s 2.5 km perimeter wall stands 21 meters high, with a 9-meter-wide moat that was once filled with water and, according to historical accounts, crocodiles. The double-walled fortification features semi-circular bastions at regular intervals, designed to prevent siege scaling.
The fort witnessed some of the most dramatic events in Indian history, including the imprisonment of Shah Jahan, the coronation of Aurangzeb, and the Siege of Agra during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (source: ASI historical records).
