Discover India's Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is a 16th-century ghost city built by Emperor Akbar as his capital, abandoned after just 14 years due to water scarcity, and remarkably well preserved.

What Is Fatehpur Sikri?

Fatehpur Sikri is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in India — a complete Mughal city frozen in time. Emperor Akbar founded it as his new capital in 1571, naming it Fatehpur (“City of Victory”) after his successful Gujarat campaign. Yet by approximately 1585, the entire city was abandoned, most likely due to an inadequate water supply, and has remained largely uninhabited ever since.

UNESCO inscribed Fatehpur Sikri as a World Heritage Site in 1986, citing its outstanding collection of Mughal public buildings, monuments, and palaces (source: UNESCO World Heritage List). The site spans approximately 6 km in circumference and sits atop a rocky ridge 37 km southwest of Agra.

What Are the Must-See Structures at Fatehpur Sikri?

The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) is the tallest gateway in the world at 54 meters from ground level, built in 1601 to commemorate Akbar’s victory in the Deccan (source: ASI). Entering through this gate leads to the Jama Masjid courtyard, one of the largest mosques in India.

Within the courtyard stands the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, a Sufi saint whose prophecy of an heir motivated Akbar to build the city. The tomb’s exquisite marble lattice screens (jali) are considered among the finest in India.

The Panch Mahal is a five-story palatial structure with 176 intricately carved columns, each unique in design. Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) features an extraordinary central pillar supporting a circular platform connected by four walkways, where Akbar is said to have debated with scholars of different religions.

How Should You Plan Your Visit?

We recommend visiting Fatehpur Sikri as part of a full-day Agra itinerary or as a stop on the drive between Agra and Jaipur during the Golden Triangle tour. The site is large and exposed with little shade, so morning visits during the cooler months (October to March) are ideal.

The complex has two main sections: the royal palace area (ticketed) and the Jama Masjid with Salim Chishti’s tomb (free entry). Our guides cover both sections, bringing the stories of Akbar’s court to life — from the Navaratnas (Nine Jewels) of his cabinet to the religious debates he hosted in the Ibadat Khana.
