We have been making this journey with our guests for over 15 years and have tested every mode of transport extensively. Below, we break down each option with current timings, costs, and practical advice.
What Are the Train Options from Delhi to Agra?
Gatimaan Express (Train No. 12049/12050): India’s first semi-high-speed train, reaching speeds of 160 km/h. It departs Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 8:10 AM and arrives at Agra Cantt at 9:50 AM (1 hour 40 minutes). The return service departs Agra at 5:50 PM, reaching Delhi at 7:30 PM. Executive Class fare is approximately ₹1,500 and Chair Car is approximately ₹750. Booking opens 120 days in advance on irctc.co.in.

Vande Bharat Express: Newer semi-high-speed service with multiple departures. Journey time approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Check current schedules on irctc.co.in.
We recommend booking train tickets at least 2-3 weeks in advance during peak season (October-March), as seats sell out quickly on popular services.
How Do You Drive from Delhi to Agra?
Via Yamuna Expressway: The most popular route at 165 km, taking approximately 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic. The Yamuna Expressway is a modern, access-controlled 6-lane highway opened in 2012 with a toll of approximately ₹615 for cars. Rest stops with fuel, food, and washrooms are available every 50 km.
Via NH19 (old route): The traditional 200 km route through Mathura and Faridabad. Takes 4-5 hours due to mixed traffic including trucks and city sections. Not recommended for tourists unless you wish to stop at Mathura (birthplace of Lord Krishna) en route.
A private car hire from Delhi to Agra costs approximately ₹3,000-5,000 one way for a sedan and ₹5,000-7,000 for an SUV. Our same-day Agra tour from Delhi includes round-trip private transport with an experienced driver, a licensed guide, and all entry fees for $89 per person — which often works out cheaper and far more convenient than arranging transport independently.
What About Buses from Delhi to Agra?
The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) operates regular Volvo and AC bus services from Delhi’s ISBT Sarai Kale Khan terminal to Agra’s Idgah Bus Stand. Journey time is 4-5 hours, and fares range from ₹300 for ordinary buses to ₹800 for luxury Volvo coaches. Departures are available throughout the day.
Private bus operators like RedBus and IntrCity also run services on this route with slightly higher comfort and comparable pricing. Buses are a budget option but are slower and less flexible than trains or private cars.
Which Option Do We Recommend?
For most of our guests, we recommend a private car for maximum flexibility — you choose your departure time, can make stops en route, and are not dependent on train schedules. This is what we include in all our Agra tour packages.
For independent travelers on a budget, the Gatimaan Express offers the best combination of speed and cost. Just be aware that it has a single departure time in each direction, which limits your scheduling flexibility.
If budget is the primary concern and you have ample time, the UPSRTC Volvo bus is comfortable and affordable, though significantly slower.
Whichever option you choose, remember that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays and is best visited at sunrise or in the early morning. Plan your departure from Delhi accordingly.
